今天的翻译材料选自《经济学人》之《德国国防：德国的原子弹》German Defense: Eine deutsche Atombombe译文来源于考研英语时事阅读）我们采取先中文后英文的方式，大家先把中文材料翻译一遍，然后再对照英语原文对比反思。

But in Germany's think-tanks the debate kept raging. Since 1945 West Germany and then the reunited country have relied on the American nuclear shield to deter aggression from Russia.

A prominent thesis, outlined in 1984 by Josef Joffe, a journalist, holds that European integration was only possible because this external American power had “pacified” the age-old Franco-German conflicts.

So West Germany, on its best behaviour after the war, signed the non-proliferation treaty in the 1960s; it reaffirmed the pledge in the treaty that led to reunification in 1990.

3. reunited: 重新统一的

reunite: 重聚；重新统一

名词形式是 reunification

As of this evening, Germany is reunited. In Berlin they're celebrating.

从今晚起，德国统一了。他们正在柏林庆祝。

4. 核庇护： nuclear shield

n. 盾；防护物；保护者

vt. 遮蔽；包庇；避开；保卫

vi. 防御；起保护作用

shield sb from doing sth: 保护某人使免受……

5. deter sth from sb：阻止某人做某事

deter vt. 制止，阻止；使打消念头

6. outline:

n. 轮廓；大纲；概要；略图

vt. 概述；略述；描画…轮廓

The new president outlined plans to deal with crime, drugs, and education.

新总统概述了解决犯罪、毒品和教育问题的计划。

7. pacify: vt. 使平静；安慰；平定

pacify 除了表示“安抚”，也可以表示“（运用武力）平息矛盾或战争以达到和平”

Economic reforms are needed to pacify and modernize the country.

需要进行经济改革使该国实现和平和现代化。

8. age-old: adj. 古老的；由来已久的

the age-old notion： 由来已久的观念

9. sign ……treaty: 签署……条约

10. 重申……承诺：reaffirm the pledge

reaffirm vt. 再肯定，重申；再断言

名词形式是 reaffirmation

pledge:

n. 保证，誓言；抵押；抵押品，典当物

政府不向恐怖分子妥协的保证

keep/fulfil/honour a pledge 履行承诺

Eisenhower fulfilled his election pledge to end the war.
